Set Review ➟ LEGO® 76271 Gotham city

A huge "wow!" to the designers of this set, we've all seen plenty of unofficial LEGO embossed pictures on the internet... but this one is actually playable! It has areas where you can (must?) remove certain parts to get to the bottom to reveal which characters are in the area. A set with no less than 4210 pieces, with 4 mifigures, some of them long awaited by me like Catwoman.

What a pile of bags inside! Once something is sorted out, we see that... we have a huge amount of work to do until we see the set built. In the book prior to the start of construction, we are shown a "sitemap" of what the emblematic building in question represents. So we will be seeing sites ranging from Wayne Manor, Arkham Asylum, Penguin's boat... It's very detailed!

In addition, the book indicates which episode corresponds to what is going to be built in almost every bag. We start with The strange secret of Bruce Wayne. And here you have the hero.

We will build the minifigure base and leave him there waiting for the rest of his companions. The format of the base is similar to that of the UCS Batmobile, 76139, but of course, that one had 3 minifigures and this one has 4.

Little by little, an incredible pile of episodes of "Batman. The animated series". So we're in for a lot of memories to build up. A zeppelin! :O

In the next area we will build Wayne Manor. A few well-placed pieces and it looks beautiful.

The Batcave has been designed to the millimetre - what a delight the rocks at the edge, and the Batmobile - what an incredible construction!

The forest simulating the journey to Gotham from Wayne Manor... what a great way to capture these concepts.

We start another quadrant at the top and build up again the details that have already been captured above.

The truth is that it is a totally different set from the ones I have built so far. How the layers that hide inside different scenes are built. It's amazing.

Details with Enigma, Catwoman - too bad they're stickers!

Hi Harley!

Gotham city court. The construction is superb. Especially the lower part of the columns. The part of Enigma and Catwoman is already well hidden, ready to be discovered when we feel like it.

The first printed piece, of course, is Batman :)

Here we follow the previous dynamic and place Batman at the top of Gotham to keep a close eye on the city. The little zeppelin is really cool!

The genius is hidden. In the tiling of the dark building it is very interesting to play with the jumpers to get it.

It looks simple but there are tricky moves. The staggered building in reddish brown is not to be missed.

Well, we built the rest of it and the opera building.... Oh mamma mia, what a marvel! And that's the end of the first volume of the construction, what do you think? On to the second one!

Well, from here I thought we would follow the same line but no. We will now start from the top left corner. Now we will start from the upper left corner so we will momentarily leave aside everything we have already built in the set that corresponds to the middle of the picture. Again detail of a zeppelin illuminating the city.

What do you think of the batwing? Very cool and with only 29 pieces :).

Now the construction focuses on the famous Arkham Asylum. These little constructions have a lot of little tricks. Without revealing any details I encourage you to take a look at the door for example.

Even though I hate putting stickers on this set I decided to put them and I think the reason is that when I saw the model it reminded me of those incredible comics, graphic novels by the great Chris Ware. Yes, the ones where he makes use of those pictorial diagrams that tell a story without any text or text bubbles.

Fascinating. Joker with the broken fence, the acid tank underneath him... there are a lot of very cute and 100% recognisable winks.

Next we will finish the entrance to Arkham and also Poison Ivy's area :). The detail of the access road to the asylum is great.

We begin another vertical section of the painting. A distant zeppelin and the antenna of a building are presented in this short section.

In the following image, another preview of the buildings in the background, which will later be overshadowed by the buildings in the foreground, can be seen.

In this building, the same technique that already appeared in the Gotham opera is used again, with small differences of course. It is a technique that is used practically throughout the set.

The details of the smoke-simulating plane trees and the clock tower are a delight.

Now it is time to compose the grey ghost area.

The amusement park! How interesting how they've depicted the Ferris wheel! And Joker's face? :O

Well, as you can see we are in the final stretch of the set. And of course we finish this bag with the beginning where the bat signal will be placed :)

Poison Ivy and Harley show up there... I see diamonds. Is it because of the character that arrives now?

Indeed, the kitten that the bat fell in love with makes an appearance. And with this we have the complete set of characters.

The implementation of the upper part of this building is a stroke of genius - again - by the designers.

Appears... Two-face!

Must I confess that I find the mixture of dark orange and reddish brown very stimulating?

The top of the Laff building is incredible. The fit on the left side is impossible until you turn the signs on their hinges. How did someone come up with this way of building? :O

We are nearing the end of the construction. One of my all-time favourite characters appears. The scarecrow.

And now we can finally join the two parts of the painting together - the size is enormous!

As you can see, this central building follows more or less the same pattern as others we have already seen, but it also has its own particularity. As you can see, the construction is not speculative and therefore there are bound to be some technical surprises in store for us.

And then we come to the GCPD, of course! A jewel, the detail of the fan in the office on the top right is fantastic.

Well, that brings us to the last bag, number 44. I can't wait to put the bat signal in it and finish the "little square". My wife has already asked me ironically if it's for her. She says she will put it next to her 1989 Batmobile. The only possible answer was yes. And here it is finished.

This set can be an infinite beginning of themes in which this original way of construction can be used. It has a very good exploded view, the figures are very good and the price per piece is good. The techniques and the minimalism used to imbue every detail with so little is impeccable. When I saw the set I thought it was very nice but once built I have to say that it is magnificent. The fact that some of the buildings can be easily uncovered to see what characters they hide and that the construction manual shows the chapters to which they refer makes it very complete. More than 4000 pieces full of surprises and techniques that, due to their small size, are complicated for a layman in this scale like me. Without a doubt this set is a new journey for me and I think it will be for many of those fans who dare to try it, I think they will not be disappointed at all! Thanks to LEGO for sending this set for review in this article. LEGO does not endorse or support the opinions expressed in this article in any way.
